Eiffel Tower was constructed in 1889

The Eiffel Tower is a construction built for the International Exhibition of the city (1889) and it commemorates the French Revolution centenary. The tower has been opened by the Prince of Wales. Gustave Eiffel was the person chosen for the design of this tower from 700 proposals which have been submitted. After all, he wasn't accepted from the first time. Many other architects have protested the building of the tower, well known people such as Emile Zola, Charles Garnier or Dumas the Younger. The height of the tower raises up to 300 meters and its weigth values around 7,000 tons. Until the early 1930, the Eiffel Tower was the tallest building in the world.

More than that, Gustave Eiffel decided to get involved in the field of meterology. When the construction began, he started to fit the top of the tower as a station for observation to measure the wind speed. After doing this, Gustave started to look at the wind effects and the resistance of the air, being concerned on aerodynamic. Later, he tried to imagine an automatic device which could slide along a cable stretching between the first floor and the second one of the tower

Since the tower helped capturing the infamous spy during the first World War it has received a great importance to the people in France, so that there were no rumours anymore about being demolished

Since 1910 the tower has become a part of the International Time Service. It was also witness to a few movie scenes. Every year 580 kilowatt hours of electricity are used for the illumination of the tower. It also needs annually 2 tons of paper for tickets, and around 500 liters of metal cleansers

On the four facade there are engraved 72 names of those people who have contributed to the science. The engraving was restored in 1986-1987 by the New Society of Exploration of the Eiffel Tower, and lately in the 20th century.
